Eggciting developments in the coop! We went away for the weekend a while ago and when we got home I was happy to discover eggs! Not just one but three eggs in the nest box (and one in the run but I try not to think of that one). I promptly decided that we were having eggs for dinner that night. And they tasted, well, like eggs. The color was impressive, though, very orange. Note the variability in the sizes. As a brand new layer the pullet was laying small eggs (perfectly normal) but one was definitely bigger. Much to my surprise the big one was a double yoked egg (also perfectly normal). We have gotten about a dozen eggs since then and they are about an even split between single and double yoked eggs. I'm sure she'll work it out eventually. Which of my lovely pullets is laying? I suspect that it's one of the gift chickens from my aunt. They are slightly older and I saw the speckled sussex leaving the hen house the other afternoon and, when I looked, there was an egg present. However, she refused to cooperate with this investigation.
In other thrilling chicken related news we changed the door of the hen house to a more attractive covered door. Tragically I'm not good at this sort of thing so it actually hangs worse. That's right, I traded function for form on my chicken house. I just need to finish that last tiny bit of siding and put on a real latch (it's being held together with a bungee cord right now) and the coop will be officially done. Actually, I need to work out a pulley for the chicken sized door and add a little more hardware cloth. But I'll finish it some day.
