Do you ever feel like the universe is a loving and benevolent place? I love this feeling but it is usually a fleeting one. However, as I sit here with my halloween cupcake (how did you know I wanted one, Universe?), I am reminded of my weekend. The warm glowing moment seemed to stretch on and on. Exception: I forgot my camera so there is no photographic evidence. Arguably, it didn't even happen.
We headed north with two intentions this weekend. First was to spend time with family. All of the Ian's siblings descended on the ancestral Hume home this Saturday. Mom made delicious food and we ate accordingly. Now that the season is changing I'm craving hearty meals and beef stew definitely fits the bill. And apple cake. Who knew I loved apple cake this much? We played the old board games that I've never heard of (The aMAZEing labyrinth?) but were very loved by the Hume children. We also took a very nice fall walk. They're a couple of weeks ahead of us, season-wise, and so all the leaves are gold or falling. I love kicking through piles of leaves. And all of the childhood nostalgia that comes up on visits home.
Our second purpose was rabbit acquisition. The rabbit plan has been slow to get off the ground but I finally picked a breed, Champagne d'Argent, and found a couple of breeders. As luck would have it one of the breeders lives only a couple of miles from Ian's folks. Sue and I have been emailing for a couple of weeks and I can't tell you how excited I was to visit. She doesn't just have a couple of hutches in her back yard she has a whole farm: Daisy Hill Fiber Farm. We met the sheep, llamas, alpaca, goats (I got to milk one!), chickens, dogs and rabbits. It was awesome. Sue knew this was my first serious rabbit purchase and sent me away much better informed. We handled a bunch of different Champagnes to give me an idea of how they ought to feel. This cumulated in her pointing to three juniors and insisting I grade on quality and identify their genders. Lesson: pay attention, you never know when there will be a test. I also got to pick the daddy for a litter that, hopefully, will be arriving in 27 days. I walked away with hours of rabbit education, one junior buck (4 months old) and one senior doe (with babies?!). It was an awesome day. Sue and Chuck are awesome people. Come meet my awesome new rabbits! The boy doesn't have a name yet. I'm thinking something that starts with an 'N'. Noob? Nutter? Suggestions?
We got home in time for me to spend some quality time with my new ipad. That's right, Ian got me an ipad for my birthday. Holy cow! What a nice man.
