It's freezing here!

Literally!
A dear friend told me just yesterday that she's not really buying the seasonal lag between here and the west side. Well, that seasonal lag was driven home last night by a good freeze. So, to give this vague idea physical form here is what basil that has been frozen looks like.
I just planted it last weekend and now it is totally dead.
And this is what frozen green beans look like.
They were so lovely yesterday! A few are just now poking out of the ground and I think they may have been the lucky ones. I have no idea if they can come back from this. Other casualties include the sweet potato plant and the marigolds. I was more thorough in covering the tomato and that is the only reason it survived. My poor neighbors were not so lucky but I thought photographing their dead tomatoes might seem rude. hehe.
I got all the stuff to make a hoop house but was feeling lazy and thought I was in the clear (after Mother's Day). I regret this decision and vow to be more careful and proactive in the future. It's too late for you, basil. I'm sorry.

I never said I wasn't buying the seasonal lag! I just wanted to visit some farms in your area since you have them! :)

We barely put basil out here, so it seems to me like *you* were the one who was dreaming. And in the ground! Mine are in pots. That I could bring in on a chilly night... just saying. Or cloches you've heard of those. You don't need a whole hoop house. I think you could have just tied some plastic bags on the top of them to keep the chill off.

Later in the summer when your tomatoes are 6 feet tall and mine are starving for sunshine I'll be the one who's crying.

That is the saddest post ever! My poor little plants are dying because stupid grubby wormy things are killing them from the roots up. They will look fine and happy one day, then sad and wilted the next. It is war and I have no ammo! But I am happy we are all trying at least.
